PAYER Interview: Maurice Deuss

Mr. Maurice Deuss started at PAYER at the beginning of February as Head of Global Account Management for the Business Unit “Healthcare & Medical / Personal Health”.
COULD YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE?

I am an Engineer with a degree in Chemical Technology and Metallurgy and started my career in 1996 with Philips. During the first decade of my career, I have been responsible for prototyping, product design, tool design and project management for a wide range of products involving metal stamping and plastic injection molding. Since my move to Hungary 18 years ago, I have become responsible for Business Unit Management and Account Management in a big EMS and I am happy to say that I have now recently started at PAYER as Head of Global Account Management.

WHAT STRENGTHS AND COMPETENCIES DO YOU THINK A COMPANY NEEDS TO HAVE BE SUSTAINABLY SUCCESSFUL IN TODAY’S MARKET – A VUCA WORLD?

The world has become more and more complex and uncertain. Unexpected events require companies that can adapt quickly and respond to the ever-changing market dynamics. The COVID pandemic, the Ukraine war and the supply chain disruptions recently are great examples where agility is key. In order to be agile in these times, it is important to have a clear vision for the company and it is important that this vision is clearly communicated as well as explained within a company.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD LEADER IN YOUR OPINION?

I truly believe that a good leader incentivizes his team to work in an independent manner with the proper level of authority, while being there when extra attention or protection is needed. It is important to build up a cooperation based on trust to create a well-oiled machine as team. In my opinion, the biggest threat to the performance of a team is micro management as it takes away the trust factor and disturbs the balance of a team.

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE AT PAYER?

After working for a large multinational corporation with many parallel organizations with different goals, it is very refreshing to work for a mid-sized company like PAYER, where the organizational structure is much more agile and allows for a higher speed of action as required in our industry. The size and the structure also enable a more personal manner of cooperation which makes it easier to feel part of a team.
